REVIEW: Anna Dressed In Blood by Kendare Blake

Publisher Synopsis:
Cas Lowood has inherited an unusual vocation: He kills the dead.

So did his father before him, until his gruesome murder by a ghost he sought to kill. Now, armed with his father's mysterious and deadly athame, Cas travels the country with his kitchen-witch mother and their spirit-sniffing cat. Together they follow legends and local lore, trying to keep up with the murderous dead—keeping pesky things like the future and friends at bay.

When they arrive in a new town in search of a ghost the locals call Anna Dressed in Blood, Cas doesn't expect anything outside of the ordinary: move, hunt, kill. What he finds instead is a girl entangled in curses and rage, a ghost like he's never faced before. She still wears the dress she wore on the day of her brutal murder in 1958: once white, but now stained red and dripping blood. Since her death, Anna has killed any and every person who has dared to step into the deserted Victorian she used to call home.

And she, for whatever reason, spares his life.

My Star Rating - I am looking for 1/2 stars to add to my rating system, this would be a 4.5

My Review:
First things first, I love the fact that this story is told from the perspective of a guy. So many YA books these days are told solely from the perspective of the female lead character.

Cas is what amounts to a ghost hunter, often times they jokingly reference Ghostbusters, but in all honesty, that is basically what he is. Instead of the goo he has a knife. He is a strong male lead who shows his softer side which I loved.

The story unfolds effortlessly and is hauntingly beautiful. Its amazing how a character who is so sinister and has done such harsh things is so loveable at the same time, Anna may not be the main character, but she steals the show. Kendare Blake really does a fantastic job of having you connect with the character.

This book is not for the faint of heart. There is subject matter that is for lack of a better term, gory, but the overall story is expertly woven and haunting yet addictive.

It really is. From reading the jacket cover I didn't think I would like it as much as I did. I love being surprised like that!
